VIP Debate Club kicks off in Johannesburg

Our successful VIP Campaign, which encourages youth democratic participation, continues with the introduction of the VIP Debate Club. The monthly Braamfontein event brings together young people to debate the most youth-specific political topics of the day. Our next debate is 28 October. The VIP Campaign is supported by Omidyar Network.

The VIP Debate Club is a regular open event at which young people are invited to discuss and debate some of the most pertinent youth-specific political topics of the day in a relaxed space over a drink. Facilitated by young social commentators and influencers, the club is a great place to join like-minded people for a healthy debate.

The VIP Debate Club is back in Braamfontein this month. Join us for the debate on Tuesday 28 October at the Bannister Hotel, Braamfontein.

In recent times, the Blackface incident at the University of Pretoria and the ongoing criticism around the lack of transformation in South Africa rugby have reignited the debate around whether South Africa is a post-racial society. Our debate will discuss whether the Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu-inspired national-building imperative of self-diagnosing South African society as the “Rainbow Nation” in 1994 may have been premature. Did this stymie the racial dialogue required to genuinely move South Africa forward or does South Africa really reflect the “Rainbow Nation”?

Our panel includes former GQ associate editor and respected journalist Siphiwe Mpye with more to be announced soon. Our own Lee Molefi will be facilitating the debate.
